By simply checking out a book with a library card, you are automatically a member of the Library. "Friends Of The Library" is a separate support group, whose funds help to purchase books and equipment, and maintain the premises. To help sponsor the Library please become a member of "Friends Of The Library". It's simple. Just click on the icon above.

‍The library features wireless internet service. It is available from 6:00 am - 6:00 pm. When the library is closed, you can access it from the parking area. Of course, your laptop must be equipped with an appropriate receiver (internal antenna card, USB receiver, etc.)

You can access the entire Cochise County Library District collection from your home computer (no, not all at once).To find out how to order books from home, please stop by and see the librarian.

Did you know that the Friends of the Myrtle Kraft Library pays the monthly Columbus Electric bill for the post office, library and bookstore? Yup, your donations pay those bills, keeping all three buildings open and operating. **

Recently, the Friends of Myrtle Kraft Library made a sizable donation to Apache School so they can purchase books. Our goal is to enrich the curriculum and enable students to explore interests outside of the classroom.

We also have a small team of volunteers who help keep the library running.

*Rene Donaldson mans the library, keeping it open when Kathleen is away. She contributes her time and expertise and is our most senior volunteer.

*Brenda Schmidt oversees the bookstore, soliciting for new selections, shelving, and rotating books. Mary & Jon Lacey open and close the bookstore.

*Tony Donaldson installed centralized lighting for the bookstore, assessed the library's air circulation needs and more.

*Volunteers, who do what needs to be done without wanting recognition.They water the trees, pull invasive weeds and more. Your membership donation will go, in part, to Friends installing an irrigation system to make watering easier.

Arizona Memory Project

Our community has begun collecting oral histories in both audio and video format. Below are some of what we’ve collected so far. These include both full interviews (in their entirety) and shorter excerpts addressing common topics. There are also videos of Community Events here.

OUR LIBRARY’S HISTORY

With the assistance of volunteers, Myrtle Kraft founded our current library in 1978 on the site of the old school house owned by San Simon School District #18.

When Mrs. Kraft retired in 1995, the community decided to honor her by naming the library after her. Dedicated volunteers, many of them members of Friends of the Myrtle Kraft-Portal Library, continue to staff the desk and do most of the behind the-scenes work.

The library has been a community gathering place, the staging area for parades and celebrations, and the site of hundreds of meetings, classes, discussion groups, and award-winning summer series called "Library for Kids”.

The library became a branch of Cochise County Library District in 1980. Our Branch Coordinator, under the direction of the Cochise County Library District, provides training and support for the volunteers. The district provides books and other library materials, supplies, equipment and interlibrary loan services.
